Here are selected stories making headlines in the mainstream media in the build up to the 2019 AFCON finals. These are views and opinions of the reporters and they do not represent the official position of the Zimbabwe Football Association.
Here we go!!
It’s an exciting period as we build up to the AFCON 2019 finals. In 15 days, the Warriors of Zimbabwe will line up against Egypt, and in that Pharaohs squad will be one Mohamed Salah, the tri-EPL golden boot winner and a UEFA Champions league winner.
Speculation is awash in the media as everyone awaits the naming of the 23 players to do duty in Egypt.
NewsDay reports that Thabani Kamusoko has clinched a place in the AFCON squad to be announced later. The reporter Henry Mhara wrote that Butholezwe has chnces of making it too while the third goalkeepers’ slot will be filled by either Elvis Chipezeze or Talbert Shumba. According to the report, George Ciigova and Edmore SIbanda are certainly part of the squad.
The Herald on the other hand reports that Macaulley Bonne is out of contention because his papers will not be sorted in time for the registration deadline which is now just 6 days away. The Leyton Orient man just completed a hugely successful season and his goals helped his team gain promotion into the third tier of English football. Bonne played for Zimbabwe in an Under-23 friendly with Morocco back in 2014 but he has not yet acquired local identity documents to be eligible to play for the Warriors.
The tabloid H-Metro reports that Kudakwashe Mahachi, fresh from tying the knot, wants to win the COSAFA Cup. The groom is however not part of the 30 Warriors registered to play in this year’s tournament. Its definitely a wish he has for every one of his teammates who are playing.
