Khama Billiat scored in the 22nd minute to thrust Zimbabwe into the lead but the hosts levelled the score in the 50th minute through Thievy Bifouma.
After surviving a nervy start, the Warriors bossed the game, creating a couple of chances to put the game beyond the reach of Congo.
Biliat scored the Zimbabwe’s first shot on target off Musona’s square pass in the box but Musona had his point-blank shot saved by Chancel Massa back into the skipper’s path before sending the rebound wide.
Zimbabwe’s backline was resolute throughout the match, weathering incessant pressure from the hosts as Congo pressed for a winner.
Clear cut chances were far in between for either side and both George Chigova and Massa had little to do.
Now on 4 points, Zimbabwe remain at the summit of group G on a superior goal difference (3) to DR Congo (2) who also drew 1 all with Liberia.
Congo and Liberia are third and fourth respectively, both with a point each.
Zimbabwe’s next AFCON qualifying matches are back to back matches away and at home to DR Congo between 8 and 16 October 2018.
