Zimbabwe’s quest for a place at the 2018 African Nations Championship was dealt a blow when the Warriors lost 1-0 to Namibia in a match played at Sam Nujoma Stadium on 16 July.
The one nil loss away to Namibia in the first leg of a CHAN qualifier left Zimbabwe needing nothing short of a 2-goal margin victory when the two sides meet in the reverse tie on 23 July.
Following a sweeping success in the just ended COSAFA cup, hopes were high that Zimbabwe would at least avoid defeat against Namibia, but the brave Warriors proved too strong for the Warriors.
The teams were tied at nil all at the interval, but two minutes after the restart, Hendrik Somaeb scored what would prove to be the only goal of the match, downing the newly crowned COSAFA champions.
When the Warriors take to the field on Sunday, a two-goal margin victory will be the target for Zimbabwe in order to progress to the third and final round qualification stage.
Either Lesotho or Comoros awaits in the next round. Comoros won the first of the teams’ two 2nd round qualifiers by two goals to nil.
