Young Warriors win silver

Zimbabwe won silver at the 2018 edition of the COSAFA Youth Championship final played on 13 December after a 3-4 defeat to South Africa on penalties. The Young Warriors were within six minutes plus additional time of registering a famous win over eventual winners South Africa before Lyle Foster cancelled out Delic Murimba’s goal in the 84th minute.
South Africa’s equaliser came within minutes of the introduction of Frank Kuchineyi in place of Goalkeeper of the tournament, Tinotenda Ali who had been injured.
The match was tied at 1 all at the end of regulation time and Khulekani Khubheka saved spot kicks from Clive Rupiya and Leonard Jani.
The Bekithemba Ndlovu coached side’s appearance in the final marked an improvement from the 2017 edition when the team exited at the group stage.
Zimbabwe were brilliant in all matches except the 1-4 loss to Angola in a dead rubber final group match.
Star players Tatenda Tumba and Delic Murimba won three player-of-the-match awards between themselves, while Murimba was also crowned top goal scorer together with Foster for a haul of five goals.
The Triangle Football Club forward contributed 50% of Zimbabwe’s 10 goals at the tournament.
