The President of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), who is also the president of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), Dr Phillip Chiyangwa, has congratulated Caps United, following the Champions’ progression to the group stage of the Total CAF Champions League.
Speaking to ZIFA’s official website, www.zifa.org.zw, Dr Chiyangwa saluted the Caps United executive, technical team and players for orchestrating such a huge and famous upset in African club football.
“I want to congratulate the whole Caps United structure for masterminding what will go down as probably one of the biggest upsets in this competition, defeating a club with a history of success.
“Caps United’s success comes at the right moment, when Southern Africa is strengthening its hold on African football as witnessed by our own (COSAFA) Ahmad’s ascendancy to CAF Presidency,” Dr Chiyangwa said.
The President went on to urge the victorious Caps United team to continue on the path of victory, knowing that Zimbabwe and Southern Africa are behind them.
“I can only encourage the team to aspire to achieve more, now that they know that anything is possible; why not go for the trophy itself,” Dr Chiyangwa added.
Caps United knocked five time African champions, TP Mazembe, out of the 2017 Champions League on away goals rule following the teams’ 1 all and nil all draws in Lubumbashi and Harare respectively.
