Zimbabwe braces for historic FIFA visit

Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) president, Gianni Infantino’s visit to Zimbabwe is a historic achievement which should be celebrated, Organising Committee chair of ZIFA and COSAFA President, Phillip Chiyangwa’s party scheduled for 23 February, Chamu Chiwanza has said.

Speaking at a press conference at the ZIFA offices, Chiwanza said Infantino had shown confidence in Chiyangwa by accepting the ZIFA President’s invitation to come to Zimbabwe.

“The coming of the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino as the guest of honour is a historic achievement which should be celebrated for the benefits it brings.

“Besides the FIFA head, the second most powerful person at FIFA, the General secretary, Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura will also be in attendance,” said Chiwanza.

Chiwanza reiterated that the function was a party for Chiyangwa’s friends in the business and football sector and not a platform to campaign for CAF presidential candidate, Ahmad of Madagascar.

ZIFA vice president, Omega Sibanda said that they were finalising plans to take the president for a tour of some football development initiatives within the capital.

“The FIFA President  might not have enough time [to tour all football infrastructure] but we will definitely try by all means to take him for a tour of our various football development initiatives such as the ZIFA Village,” said Sibanda.

Of the 54 heads of football associations who were invited, 24 confirmed their attendance and six of those are expected to arrive today.

Infantino is expected in the country on Wednesday evening.
