COSAFA Secretary General Sue Destombes has lauded Zimbabwe as the best placed member association to host the region’s flagship tournament this year.
Destombes was in the country on 22 January to meet with Sport and Recreation Commission and government officials to seek the green light to stage the senior men’s tournament here.
“We had a very good meeting with the Sport and Recreation Commission today and they had held a preliminary meeting with the minister.
“There is a lot of interest and keenness on the part of government to host the tournament.
“We are confident that the tournament will be played in Zimbabwe from the 19th of May to the 1st of June,” she said.
Zimbabwe last hosted the tournament in 2009 but has also hosted two women’s tournaments in 2011 and 2017 which were ‘immensely successful tournaments.
“We have always had successful tournaments in Zimbabwe.
“They [Zimbabwe] have got eh necessary infrastructure in terms of training grounds, hotel and accommodation, transportation and it’s a football loving nation,” she added.
Hosting a major tournament will demonstrate the association and the country’s ability to organise high profile events, and as Destombes said, it will add a feather in ZIFA’s cap.
Being the reigning Champions, Zimbabwe’ Warriors can defend their title on home soil.
